Diplomatic Thaw: Ethiopia and Somalia Mend Ties Amidst Past Tensions
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia will meet Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu, aiming to restore relations after tensions arose due to Ethiopia's plans to establish a naval base in Somalia's Somaliland region. The nations seek mutual benefits via revised commercial agreements.
In a significant diplomatic development, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is slated to visit the Somali capital, Mogadishu, this Thursday. The visit comes in the wake of improving relations with Somalia following a period of tension.
The strain in relations began in January 2024 when Ethiopia revealed plans to lease a portion of Somalia's Somaliland coastline. The proposed development of a naval base and commercial port in exchange for recognizing Somaliland's independence drew contention from Somalia.
Somalia perceived Ethiopia's move as an attack on its territorial sovereignty, responding by threatening the withdrawal of its peacekeepers and by strengthening alliances with Ethiopia's regional adversaries, Egypt and Eritrea. However, recent diplomatic efforts have led to a resolution, with both nations committing to devising agreements that ensure Ethiopia access to reliable sea routes.
