Assam's Citizenship Saga: A Look into the CAA Applications and Border Dynamics

In Assam, 39 applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act have been submitted, with two granted citizenship. Border security issues remain a concern, despite measures to prevent illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Aadhar enrollment in the state stands at 96.97%.

In a significant update from Assam, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary announced that 39 individuals have applied for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), with two successfully attaining citizenship status. However, 18 applications are still under scrutiny, and 19 have been closed, leaving room for re-application.

Concerning border security, Patowary highlighted ongoing efforts to deter infiltration attempts from Bangladesh. Between 2021 and 2024, 156 Bangladeshis were apprehended trying to cross illegally. Security along the border is maintained by BSF and Assam Police, yet challenges persist, particularly in areas like the river border in Sribhumi district.

The state's Aadhar enrollment stands at an impressive 96.97% as of January. Meanwhile, the government continues to face questions from legislators regarding potential loopholes in security and governmental involvement in infiltration attempts.
