A Mumbai court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in a case concerning his statements lauding Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The court imposed conditions and required Azmi to furnish a solvent surety bond of Rs 20,000.

The case, initiated at the Marine Drive police station in South Mumbai, was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, prompted by Azmi's comments extolling Aurangzeb's historical rule and India's prosperity during the era.

Azmi, who holds the position of Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra unit president, had defended his remarks, highlighting India's expanded borders and economic wealth under Aurangzeb while describing the ruler's conflict with Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as political.
