Israel and Lebanon Initiate Talks Amid Prisoner Release
Israel agreed to talks with Lebanon to demarcate their border, while releasing five Lebanese prisoners as a goodwill gesture. The U.S. and France will mediate discussions. Tensions have persisted since Israel's military action in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire established last November.
In a surprising diplomatic turn, Israel announced on Tuesday it has agreed to engage in talks with Lebanon to delineate their shared border. This development coincides with Israel's decision to release five Lebanese detainees as a gesture of goodwill towards the Lebanese president.
The Israeli statement confirmed that both nations, alongside the U.S. and France, would establish working committees to address the contentious demarcation issues. Meanwhile, Lebanon has acknowledged the return of four hostages, with a fifth expected soon, as stated by the Lebanese president's office.
The dialogue comes amid sustained tension, with Israel holding onto strategic positions in southern Lebanon, citing Hezbollah activities. This follows the ceasefire that concluded a year-long conflict involving significant Israeli military operations against Hezbollah, resulting in mass displacement and substantial losses for the Hezbollah ranks.
