Kuwait has freed American detainees, including veterans and military contractors, incarcerated for drug charges, in a gesture viewed as a symbol of goodwill between the two allies. A representative for the prisoners confirmed the release to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The development comes after a recent visit by Adam Boehler, the Trump administration's top hostage envoy, and is part of a continued push by the US government to repatriate American citizens held in foreign prisons.
Six of the newly released individuals were escorted from Kuwait to New York by Jonathan Franks, a consultant specializing in cases involving American hostages, who had traveled to Kuwait to aid in their release.
