In an effort to reduce barriers for job seekers and encourage economic mobility, Minister for Social Development and Employment Louise Upston has announced the introduction of the Relocate for Work Support payment. This new initiative, which will be available starting 31 March, is aimed at individuals currently on a benefit who are unable to secure employment in their current location but have a job offer elsewhere.

The government recognizes that geographical constraints can often prevent people from accepting suitable job opportunities. By offering financial assistance, the Relocate for Work Support payment aims to ease the transition for those who need to move to a different region in order to take up new employment.

"One of the biggest hurdles job seekers face is the cost and complexity of relocating," said Louise Upston. "This payment is designed to help cover travel expenses, whether that’s fuel costs for a private vehicle, airfare, bus fares, or ferry tickets. We also provide additional support for shifting personal belongings, ensuring that the move is as seamless as possible."

Upston emphasized that the goal of the program is not just to fill vacant jobs, but to help individuals achieve independence and financial stability. “We want to make sure that a move doesn’t stand in the way of someone taking up a good opportunity. Helping people get back into the workforce isn’t just good for our economy—it’s good for individuals, their families, and their communities.”

This new program replaces the $5k to Work grant, which originally began as the $3k to Christchurch initiative. That grant was initially introduced to help New Zealanders relocate to Christchurch and contribute to the city’s recovery and rebuilding efforts following the earthquakes. While that scheme proved effective, the government sees the need for a broader, more flexible approach that can assist job seekers nationwide.

In recent months, the Ministry of Social Development has identified areas with labor shortages and industries in need of skilled workers. The Relocate for Work Support payment will help match job seekers with those opportunities, ensuring that talent is distributed where it’s needed most.

In addition to transportation and moving costs, the program also offers guidance and support to help individuals and families settle into their new communities. This might include connections to local resources, advice on housing options, and information on schooling and childcare for those with dependents.

The government’s overall goal is clear: to reduce dependency on welfare, boost local economies, and help people build meaningful careers. By removing the financial and logistical challenges of relocation, the Relocate for Work Support payment seeks to give New Zealanders a fair chance at securing employment and achieving greater independence.

As Louise Upston put it, “We know there are opportunities out there, and we’re committed to making it easier for people to take them. By providing targeted support, we can help New Zealanders move forward, both in their careers and in their lives.”
