CJI Khanna: A New Chapter in Law

Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna announced he would not accept any post-retirement official positions but plans to continue contributing to the legal field. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, nearing the end of his tenure, has expressed his intention to refrain from accepting any official roles post-retirement. Instead, he plans to continue contributing to the legal sector, stating, "I will have a third innings and will do something related to law."

Justice Khanna, who took up his role as CJI on November 11, 2024, shared these insights following the ceremonial bench proceedings, where he met with journalists. His decision mirrors that of upcoming CJI-designate Justice B R Gavai, who also declined future official assignments post-retirement.

During his tenure, Justice Khanna addressed a significant controversy involving high court judge Justice Yashwant Vermam, underscoring the importance of decisive and adjudicatory judicial thinking. Actions taken included a preliminary inquiry and a push for Justice Vermam's resignation after an in-house inquiry panel's findings.
