The assailants, identified by New Delhi as Pakistani nationals with Islamabad's backing, targeted a valley frequented by tourists in the picturesque Pahalgam region of Kashmir before escaping into nearby forests. Pakistan, however, denied any role in the attack and called for an independent inquiry into the events. This incident is regarded as the most severe assault on civilians within India since the infamous 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The four-day hostilities between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed countries, marked their most significant military confrontation in decades.
