A border firefight between troops from Uganda and South Sudan has left at least four soldiers dead, a Ugandan military official reported. The confrontation has reignited longstanding tensions over disputed territories.
According to Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye, a Ugandan soldier was killed, prompting Ugandan forces to retaliate against the South Sudanese troops, leading to the death of three additional soldiers. Wani Jackson Mule, a local official from South Sudan, countered that five bodies were received.
The altercation took place in Uganda's northern West Nile region when South Sudanese soldiers reportedly encamped within Ugandan borders. Following the clash, military leaders from both nations swiftly agreed to a ceasefire to investigate. A joint committee continues to work on defining the border, with a resolution expected by 2027.
