In a landmark decision, the Manipur High Court has mandated that fresh educational certificates be issued to Dr. Beoncy Laishram, acknowledging her transitioned identity. The court's directive follows a petition filed by Dr. Laishram after educational institutions failed to update her name and gender on official certificates, reflecting her new identity.

Having undergone gender reassignment surgery in 2019, Dr. Laishram had faced resistance from various educational boards, which continued to issue documents under her previous identity of Boboi Laishram, recorded as male. Her case underscores the challenges faced by transgender individuals in securing recognition across institutional documentation.

Issuing its order, the single bench of Justice A Guneshwar Sharma invoked the Transgender Act, 2019, and associated rules, compelling authorities to comply within a month. This decision represents a significant step forward in the protection of transgender rights within India’s educational system.
