In a significant diplomatic development, India and China announced a raft of measures on Tuesday to foster a "stable, cooperative, and forward-looking" relationship. These measures include maintaining peace along the frontier, reopening border trade routes, enhancing investment flows, and resuming direct flight connectivity between the two nations.
The announcements come amidst a backdrop of strained ties between India and the US, linked to President Donald Trump's trade and tariff policies. The joint document was the result of discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval over two days, culminating in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The two sides agreed to execute previous understandings between their leaders and promote sustainable bilateral development. Part of the agreement involves an expert group to tackle boundary issues, aiming for a fair settlement. Wang's visit, seen as an effort to rejuvenate relations after 2020's Galwan Valley clashes, highlights the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the neighbors.
