The Uttarakhand government introduced eight bills, including the anti-conversion and minority education bills, during a turbulent assembly session on Tuesday. Repeated disruptions marked the session as opposition leaders raised a ruckus over alleged rigging in recent panchayat elections and concerns about deteriorating law and order.
Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya and Congress leader Pritam Singh demanded an immediate discussion under Rule 310, postponing the Question Hour. They, along with other opposition members, disrupted the proceedings, resulting in the assembly being adjourned four times.
Despite the chaos, the state government managed to present a supplementary budget of Rs 5,315 crore. Outside the assembly, Congress MLAs staged a sit-in against alleged electoral malpractice, citing tarnished state image due to election rigging. Arya criticized the role of authorities, terming the situation an 'attack on democracy'.
