Supreme Court Calls for Tribunal Reform, Cites Lack of Facilities

In a critical move, the Supreme Court has admonished the government for its failure to provide necessary facilities to retired judges appointed to tribunals. The apex court highlighted the disinclination of former judges to accept post-retirement tribunal positions due to inadequate amenities, like stationery and transportation.

Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice R Mahadevan noted that former chief justices and judges end up discouraged by working conditions after joining, realizing the stark reality of serving in tribunals. The judges emphasized the importance of treating tribunal appointees with dignity, suggesting reform as a crucial step forward.

The court recommended establishing a committee to address these issues, ensuring a uniform infrastructure across tribunals. The Centre was urged to act promptly to fix the lapses and reconsider its approach toward these significant roles. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on December 16.
