A potential tragedy was averted Monday at Atlanta's busy airport when police arrested a man planning a mass shooting. The arrest was made possible due to a timely tip from the suspect's family, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
Billy Joe Cagle, identified as a convicted felon from Cartersville, Georgia, had broadcast his intention to shoot up the airport on social media. When authorities found his truck parked outside the terminal, they discovered an AR-15 with 27 rounds of ammunition.
Cagle now faces multiple charges, including making terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a felon. Atlanta police are collaborating with federal authorities to investigate how he acquired the weapon, which he was not legally permitted to own.
