A violent altercation unfolded in Kalyan West, Thane district, when a shopkeeper was brutally attacked by a known criminal and drug addicts demanding Rs 50 for Diwali festivities, according to police reports.
The victim, who refused their demands, was subsequently stabbed and assaulted in his shop early Thursday morning. Fellow shopkeepers intervened, capturing one of the assailants while others fled. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, aiding law enforcement in tracking the culprits.
The main perpetrator, previously implicated under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, is allegedly back to extorting locals after a recent release from prison. Police are actively seeking the remaining five accomplices involved in the crime.
