Debate on Lokayukta for Jammu and Kashmir: Statehood Hurdle

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed concerns over the establishment of a Lokayukta, stating that as a Union territory, J-K lacks the authority to appoint the anti-corruption agency, which is permissible only for states under existing legislation.

The discussion arose when CPI(M) MLA M Y Tarigami introduced a private members' Bill to establish a Lokayukta. However, Abdullah requested its withdrawal, citing Section 63 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, which restricts such powers to states.

The situation highlights J-K's current status and the pressing need for statehood restoration to strengthen anti-corruption measures, as discussions continue on alternative arrangements within the territory.
