Mizo National Front Shuts Down Mizoram in Protest Against New Forest Law

The Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition party in Mizoram, staged a statewide shutdown on Wednesday to protest the state government's adoption of the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Act (FCAA), 2023. This measure was ratified through a resolution that has fueled political tension in the region.

The MNF's protest, which began at 6 am, was observed across Mizoram, sparing only Mamit district due to an impending bypoll. Opposition leader Lalchhandama Ralte reported broad public participation, hinting at the potential for early suspension of the strike due to its reception.

With support from the People's Conference party and the Joint Civil Society Mizoram, former Chief Minister Zoramthanga emphasized his party's opposition, citing the risks of allowing central control over state lands. Concerns over national security exemptions further intensified the MNF's stance against the legislation.
