Meghalaya Court Sentences Highlight Crackdown on Drug and Sexual Crimes

In Meghalaya, two men received six-year sentences for drug offenses involving distribution to minors, while another man was sentenced to seven years for rape. These rulings come during a concerted effort by authorities to combat drug trafficking and crimes against women and children.

A local court in Meghalaya has sentenced two individuals, Marvinson Jyrwa and Skhem Kupar Massar, to six years' imprisonment for distributing drugs to minors. The East Khasi Hills Special Judge convicted them under multiple sections, including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The convicted duo was involved in possession and distribution of narcotics, a fact seen as 'deeply aggravating' by the court, particularly due to their targeting of minors. They were fined Rs 60,000 each for their offenses. Public Prosecutor SS Das represented the state in the case.

Separately, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) in Shillong convicted Bijoy Hajong of rape, sentencing him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 1 lakh fine. The District Legal Services Authority has been directed to provide compensation to the victim. These rulings are part of a wider crackdown on narcotics and crimes against women and children in the state.
