Crackdown in Brussels: Drug Trafficking Plot Unveiled
Eight individuals were arrested in Brussels linked to a plot to assassinate the city's chief prosecutor. The arrests stem from investigation into organized drug trafficking, notably involving the Albanian mafia. Authorities continue to address escalating drug-related violence in the region.
Eight people with ties to the drug trafficking underworld have been apprehended in connection with a suspected conspiracy to assassinate Brussels' chief prosecutor, according to a statement by the Belgian state prosecutor's department on Tuesday.
The arrests followed searches of 18 locations primarily in Brussels. The prosecutor's office, informed by police in July 2025, suggests the suspects have connections to organized drug trafficking and may be affiliated with the Albanian criminal mafia.
Brussels has endured increasing violence from drug gangs, with over 100 of Europe's most notorious criminal networks said to be present in Belgium. Earlier this year, authorities closed several metro stations during a manhunt for two suspects related to drug-related violence.
