In a significant display of collegiality, former Chief Justice of India, B R Gavai, has set a new standard by leaving the official Mercedes-Benz car at Rashtrapati Bhavan for his successor, Justice Surya Kant. The handover occurred following the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

Justice Gavai, who retired on November 23, attended the function in the official car but chose a personal vehicle for his return. This gesture ensures that the official vehicle remains available for Chief Justice Kant's immediate use for Supreme Court duties.

Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu. His term is expected to last until February 9, 2027. The ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
