The Assam Assembly on Friday passed an amendment bill granting land ownership to tea estate workers, aimed at correcting historical injustices. Despite facing protests from the opposition AIUDF, which demands land rights in char areas dominated by Bengali-speaking Muslims, the bill was passed by voice vote amid BJP's loud slogans.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of acknowledging the tea workers' contributions over 200 years. The Act provides them with land rights, marking a departure from colonial-era land regulations. The government will purchase and distribute land to workers, with a 20-year lock-in period to prevent sales outside the community.

Heated debates marked the Assembly, with accusations exchanged between the Chief Minister and independent legislators. Despite opposition, support for tea workers garnered wide backing. The government remains committed to land redistribution, benefiting over 14 lakh people, while initiating surveys for granting rights in char areas.
