The Government has announced the first tranche of its Major Events and Tourism funding package, revealing a vibrant line-up of international and local music artists, sports fixtures, and cultural festivals set to begin in 2026. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston made the announcement in Christchurch, joined by Kiwi music icons Six60 and Synthony, who teased a brand-new collaborative show planned for the Garden City.

Upston says the early list of supported events signals the scale and ambition of the programme. "Today's acts and events are just the start, offering something for hundreds of thousands of fans and visitors, along with a big boost to New Zealand's economy."

Major Music Acts and Festivals Headline the First Round

Among the standout events, American rock giants Linkin Park are set to perform in Auckland—marking their highly anticipated return to New Zealand. Wellington will host the renowned Ultra Music Festival, bringing its globally recognised EDM experience from Miami to the capital. Meanwhile, fans in Christchurch can look forward to a special collaboration between Six60 and Synthony, expected to be one of the country's biggest live productions of the year.

In total, the first tranche allocates over $5 million to secure these events, with the Government signalling that more announcements—including major international headliners and regionally focused events—will be made in early 2026.

Part of a $70 Million Major Events and Tourism Package

This funding marks the beginning phase of the Government's $70 million Major Events and Tourism package, designed to stimulate economic activity, support tourism operators, and strengthen hospitality businesses across the country. More than 70 events will ultimately be supported through the Events Attraction Package and the Events Boost Fund, either directly or through strategic partnerships.

Upston emphasised that the programme is about more than entertainment. "Major events don't just attract visitors – they inject life and energy into cities and towns, creating vibrant communities and unforgettable experiences."

Significant Economic Benefits for Local Communities

The Minister highlighted the wide-ranging economic benefits that major events bring. "Hotels fill up, restaurants and cafes thrive, tills ring in our shops, and local businesses see a surge in customers." Tourism operators also expect increased bookings, with international visitors likely to extend their stays to explore regional attractions.

Upston also noted the strong interest from New Zealand promoters, reflecting the industry's confidence and the country's growing appeal as a destination for global touring artists and major festivals. She said the Government is working through applications carefully to ensure contracts can be finalised promptly and funding can begin flowing to event organisers.

A Landmark Year for 2026

The Minister says this is "just the beginning", with 2026 shaping up to be one of New Zealand's busiest event years in over a decade. Additional high-profile announcements are expected early in the new year, giving both domestic and international audiences more reasons to travel, celebrate, and participate in events across the country.

With the first round now confirmed, anticipation is growing among fans, businesses, and tourism groups who see the package as a major opportunity to revitalise New Zealand's visitor economy and cultural calendar.
