On Friday, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reaffirmed that there will be no extension to the deadline for registering Waqf properties on the UMEED portal. Despite concerns raised by 'mutawallis' or caretakers, the minister emphasized that legal constraints prevent any alterations to the deadline.
The UMEED portal, established under the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, aims to digitally document all Waqf properties nationwide. Since its launch on June 6, over 1.51 lakh properties have been registered, but significant hurdles remain due to legal and logistical challenges.
To accommodate the 'mutawallis' who struggle with the registration process, Rijiju announced a temporary reprieve from penalties for three months. He encouraged those unable to meet the deadline to approach their respective Waqf tribunals for possible extensions, aligning with the law upheld by the Supreme Court.
