A student from Odisha's Sudergarh district, who had sustained 90 percent burn injuries after allegedly setting herself ablaze, has died at Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela, police reported on Monday. The tragic incident highlights ongoing safety concerns for women in the area.
According to authorities, the undergraduate student attempted to take her life following alleged blackmail by a 25-year-old man. Despite being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for enhanced care, she succumbed to her injuries. This case is the fifth similar tragedy in the state in six months.
Odisha's political leaders expressed deep concern over the incident, with Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik criticizing the government's inaction. He urged immediate measures to enforce law and order to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
