Lithuania Locks Horns with Belarus Over Meteorological Balloons
Lithuania declares a national emergency following security breaches by meteorological balloons from Belarus. These intrusions have affected civil aviation, prompting military intervention and border closures, intensifying diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

The Lithuanian government declared a national emergency on Tuesday, triggered by the security risks from meteorological balloons dispatched by Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, which have violated Lithuanian airspace in recent weeks. This move highlights escalating tensions between the neighboring countries.
The situation has forced Lithuania to intermittently shut down its main airport, leaving travelers stranded. Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene emphasized the need for stringent measures against what she termed as a Belarusian hybrid attack. Lithuania, a NATO member, stands firmly with Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression.
Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic announced that the emergency status would enable the military to patrol the border alongside police, aimed at detecting and countering the balloon threat. These balloons are known for smuggling cigarettes, but officials suspect a broader agenda of disruption orchestrated by Belarus. The development has strained relations further, as EU and NATO representatives express concern over the increasing instability in the region.
