The Fall of Crypto Titan: Do Kwon's Sentencing Looms in New York
Do Kwon, co-founder of Terraform Labs, faces sentencing in NYC for fraud related to his failed cryptocurrencies, TerraUSD and Luna. Kwon's conduct resulted in over $40 billion in losses and catalyzed a crypto market downturn. He pleaded guilty and faces up to 12 years in prison.
Do Kwon, the South Korean crypto entrepreneur behind Terraform Labs, is due for sentencing in a New York federal court on Thursday. This comes after his failed digital currencies, TerraUSD and Luna, led to a staggering $40 billion loss, shaking the crypto market to its core.
Kwon, aged 34, pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges, admitting to deceiving investors about the stability of a coin that was supposed to withstand market volatility. The fallout from TerraUSD's crash in 2022 has led federal prosecutors to seek at least a 12-year prison term, citing the massive financial havoc it wreaked.
While Kwon's attorneys have argued for a lighter, five-year sentence, he awaits Judge Paul A. Engelmayer's decision. As part of a settlement, Kwon agreed to pay an $80 million civil fine and be banned from crypto trades, a decision backed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
