In a landmark ruling, a military court in Pakistan has sentenced former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed to 14 years in prison. Charged with breaching the Official Secrets Act and engaging in political activities, Hameed's conviction is unprecedented in the country's history.
The Field General Court Martial process against Hameed began in August 2024 and lasted 15 grueling months. Accusations included misuse of authority, violation of government protocols, and causing wrongful loss, all of which he was found guilty of, as announced by the military.
This development has stirred significant political discourse in Pakistan. Information Minister Atta Tarar labeled the verdict as 'historic,' emphasizing its role in reinforcing legal accountability. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, however, expressed caution, warning of long-term repercussions of past decisions made under former Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa's tenure.
