UK Launches Probe into Foreign Influence in Politics
The UK government has initiated an investigation into foreign financial interference in politics, prompted by a former Reform UK member's conviction. Ex-MEP Nathan Gill was jailed for accepting bribes to push Russian agendas in the European Parliament. The review aims to preserve democratic integrity.
The UK government has launched an investigation into potential foreign financial interference in its political system, following a high-profile corruption case.
Nathan Gill, a former leader of Reform UK in Wales and an ex-MEP, was sentenced to over 10 years in prison last month after admitting to taking approximately £40,000 in bribes to make pro-Russian speeches between 2018 and 2019.
"This conduct is a stain on our democracy," said Housing Secretary Steve Reed. "The independent review will work to remove that stain." Reform UK has yet to comment on the situation.
