Additional security forces were deployed on Wednesday in the peripheral areas of Manipur's Bishnupur, following a night of gunfire that escalated tensions in the already volatile state. According to officials, several rounds were fired around 9 PM near Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai, areas that border the Churachandpur district.
Despite the gunfire, fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the district remains tense, though calm, as authorities continue to investigate the incidents. A senior official confirmed that no arrests have been made so far, but the situation remains under scrutiny.
These areas are notorious as the starting points of ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The recent gunfire has prompted several displaced people, including women and children, to flee their homes yet again. The shootings occurred only hours after DGP Rajiv Singh held a critical review meeting in Churachandpur, assessing security measures in place.
