In a session of turmoil, the Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a contentious bill aimed at overhauling the long-standing MGNREGA scheme with the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission. Despite heated objections, the bill promises 125 days of guaranteed rural employment annually.
Responding to an extended debate, Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan defended the government's move, pointing to initiatives like the PM Awas Yojana and Swachh Bharat Mission as evidence of upholding Gandhian principles. Chouhan criticized the opposition for allegedly abandoning these ideals in the past.
The bill's approval via voice vote led to further protests, with opposition members expressing outrage over the exclusion of Gandhi's name from the initiative, culminating in a chaotic session adjournment.
