In a tragic incident that underscores the ongoing violence in Sudan's Darfur region, more than 1,000 civilians lost their lives when the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the Zamzam displacement camp.
According to a U.N. Human Rights Office report released Thursday, about a third of these individuals were summarily executed during the RSF's occupation from April 11 to 13.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, highlighted the gravity of these actions, noting that deliberate killings of civilians could be classified as a war crime.
