The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Craig Guildford, announced his immediate retirement following criticism over banning Israeli soccer fans from a match. A watchdog report highlighted significant errors, leading to Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood losing confidence in him. The decision faced backlash from both British and Israeli officials.
The Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police, Craig Guildford, announced his immediate retirement on Friday after facing intense criticism for banning Israeli soccer fans from attending a match against Aston Villa last year. The decision was supposedly made due to security concerns but triggered a diplomatic incident.
A recent report by the police watchdog identified several errors, such as basing their decisions on a non-existent match and failing to engage with the local Jewish community. Consequently, interior minister Shabana Mahmood expressed a loss of confidence in Guildford, which led to his resignation.
Despite the November match concluding without substantial problems, the decision to exclude Israeli fans was condemned by both British and Israeli authorities. Community leaders accused the police force of mishandling intelligence, thus eroding public trust. Guildford cited the media and political pressures as reasons for his departure.
