Baltic Sea Cable Controversy: Captain Faces Charges
Wan Wenguo, captain of the Hong Kong-registered ship NewNew Polar Bear, faces charges of criminal damage for allegedly severing an undersea gas pipeline and telecom cables in the Baltic Sea. The incident has heightened tensions in the region, with allegations of sabotage circulating. The trial is ongoing.
The captain of a Hong Kong-registered ship, Wan Wenguo, is at the center of an international controversy over alleged damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. Accusations have been levied against Wan for causing 'criminal damage' to critical infrastructure between Finland and Estonia on October 8, 2023.
The incident has heightened concerns of sabotage in the region, especially following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Wan, aged 43, appeared in court, represented by lawyer Jerry Chung, who requested more time to review the case before entering a plea. The court proceedings have been adjourned to February 11.
Mistrust has shadowed the event as several European governments have accused Russia of hybrid attacks on vital infrastructure. However, Moscow denies any such actions. The case continues as Wan remains in custody with Hong Kong and European officials collaborating on investigations.
