The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri following his resignation as a protest against certain government policies, most notably the new UGC regulations. This event has sparked considerable administrative and political controversy across the state.

Agnihotri, a part of the 2019 Provincial Civil Service batch, resigned on Republic Day, expressing his disapproval of the government policies, particularly the revised University Grants Commission regulations. He argues that these regulations could incite caste-based tensions, potentially disrupting the educational environment.

His suspension was confirmed by an order from the state's Appointments Section-7, led by Special Secretary Annapurna Garg. The order indicates that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Agnihotri, with Bareilly Divisional Commissioner B S Chaudhary appointed to investigate the allegations against him.
