Drones in Sudan: Egypt's New Role in the Escalating Conflict
Egypt has deployed Turkish combat drones to its southwestern border with Sudan, marking its deepening involvement in the Sudanese civil war. This move represents a shift in Cairo's strategy as it seeks to protect national security interests amidst ongoing regional tensions and a broad array of foreign actors involved in the conflict.
Egypt's recent deployment of Turkish combat drones to a remote airstrip near the Sudan border underscores a significant escalation in the Sudanese civil war. By stationing drones at East Oweinat, Egypt aims to fortify its borders and safeguard national security amid rising tensions in the region.
Egypt has historically supported the Sudanese military against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), but its involvement has intensified as RSF gains ground in strategic regions like Darfur. Egyptian officials have emphasized maintaining Sudan's territorial integrity and preventing threats to its unity as national security imperatives.
Military experts and satellite imagery have confirmed the presence of advanced Bayraktar Akinci drones in the area. These drones, provided by Turkish defense firm Baykar, are equipped for high-altitude operations and are already being used in military strikes in Sudan, indicating Egypt's more direct intervention in the ongoing conflict.
