Controversy Erupts Over Demolition of Brick Kilns in Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir government will investigate the demolition of brick kilns and crushers in Budgam district after accusations were raised about targeting registered units while illegal operations persisted. Allegations of unfair treatment and irregularities prompted a government inquiry ensuring compliance and transparency in operations.

The Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, has announced an inquiry into the demolition of brick kilns and crushers in Budgam district. This decision follows allegations by legislators claiming that only registered and compliant units were targeted while illegal ones continued their operations.

National Conference MLA Dr. Shafi Ahmad Wan raised concerns in the Legislative Assembly about the operational fairness in Budgam where out of 199 brick kilns, 128 have complied with royalty payments. Further controversies arose as MLA Ali Mohammad Dar alleged that despite valid registrations and tax compliance, three kilns in his constituency were demolished.

The Deputy Chief Minister assured a probe into these claims and reiterated the responsibility of the district commissioner and the Geology and Mining Department to ensure all materials used by brick and crusher units are legitimate. The inquiry will be conducted by the commissioner secretary with a report to follow.
