Mahant's son, Suraj, was initially caught in the argument, but when Mahant tried to intervene, intoxicated men reportedly assaulted him, leading to grave injuries. Despite emergency medical assistance and a subsequent transfer to a medical college, Mahant was pronounced dead on arrival.
