Diplomatic Tensions: Russia Expels German Diplomat Amid Espionage Allegations
Russia expelled a German diplomat following Germany's controversial removal of a Russian diplomat accused of espionage. Berlin claims the accusations are fabricated and called the expulsion unacceptable. The incident highlights escalating diplomatic tensions amid warnings from European security services of increasing Russian intelligence threats linked to the Ukraine conflict.
In a move escalating diplomatic tensions, Russia's foreign ministry announced on Thursday the expulsion of a German diplomat. This action follows what Russia termed the unfounded expulsion of a Russian envoy accused of spying in January by Germany.
Reacting to the development, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul condemned the expulsion, labeling it as baseless and entirely unjustified. He criticized Russia for opting for retaliation over diplomatic resolution, especially as the accused diplomat belonged to the military attache staff at the German Embassy in Moscow.
Wadephul, while visiting Brunei, stated Germany retains the right to respond further. Meanwhile, security services across Europe warned of increased Russian intelligence activity aimed at deterring Western support for Ukraine against Russia's aggressive actions since February 2022.
