Turmoil erupted in the Odisha assembly on Wednesday as opposition MLAs from BJD and Congress accused the BJP-led government of mismanaging paddy procurement, igniting fervent protests. Clad as a farmer, BJD's Biswal dramatically poured paddy onto the reporter's table, symbolizing farmers' distress.
The uproar was compounded as Congress members joined BJD in branding the state government as 'anti-farmer'. Despite Speaker Surama Padhy's efforts to restore order, disruptions persisted, prompting repeated adjournments. The assembly failed to conduct business till 11.30 am, later facing the same scenario when it reconvened.
Opposition leaders, refusing to back down, blamed the government for capping procurement, forcing distress sales for farmers. In defense, BJP countered that the procurement process was proceeding smoothly. Meanwhile, Food Supplies Minister KC Patra assured that paddy is being purchased at Rs 3,100 per quintal from registered farmers.
