Tensions Rise as Pakistan Repatriates Afghan Citizens Amid Criticism

Punjab, Pakistan, plans to repatriate Afghan citizens amid a campaign against undocumented nationals, sparking tensions with Afghanistan. In a move that underscores the strained bilateral relations, Pakistan's Punjab province continues to deport Afghan citizens as part of a nationwide campaign against undocumented nationals. The province's Home Department has announced plans to repatriate 20 more Afghan citizens, contributing to the over 150,000 already deported from Punjab alone.

This policy has drawn international criticism, notably from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, who warned that these actions infringe on Pakistan's international obligations. More than 2 million Afghan citizens have reportedly been deported across Pakistan since late 2023, escalating tensions with Afghanistan.

The deportation campaign coincides with heightened diplomatic tensions. On Wednesday, Pakistan summoned the Afghan deputy head of mission to address concerns over a recent attack that resulted in the deaths of 11 Pakistani soldiers and a child, further exacerbating security concerns between the nations.
