On Monday, the Chhattisgarh assembly was in disarray as the Congress accused a BJP leader of illegal opium cultivation in Durg district. The uproar over the allegations led to 29 Congress MLAs being suspended after pushing for a discussion on the issue, which was disallowed by the assembly chair.
During Zero Hour, Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant claimed that opium farming was happening 50 km from Raipur, implicating BJP's Vinayak Tamrakar. Tamrakar and two others were arrested, yet the FIR allegedly misnamed a Rajasthan worker as the prime accused. Congress demanded the true extent of the scandal be revealed.
Deputy CM Vijay Sharma stated that a joint police and NCB raid had seized over 62 tons of opium plants, arresting three individuals. The government suspended Tamrakar and attached properties valued over Rs 16.7 crore. The episode highlights ongoing political strife and anti-narcotics efforts in the state.
