In a bid to ensure security amid escalating geopolitical tensions, Turkey has positioned six F-16 fighter jets and air defence systems in northern Cyprus. This strategic deployment was announced by Turkey's defence ministry, citing the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran and regional instability as contributing factors.

European countries have also heightened their military presence on the ethnically-divided island following a recent drone strike attributed to Lebanon's Hezbollah targeting Britain's Akrotiri air base. Turkey's decision underscores its commitment to protect the Turkish Cypriot community while dismissing accusations of aggressive intent.

The move has elicited varied reactions, with Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides criticizing it as a response to European Union security assertions.
