Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Rs 8,500 Crore Loss in Chhattisgarh Paddy Procurement

On Tuesday, tensions flared in the Chhattisgarh assembly as the Opposition Congress accused the state government of orchestrating an Rs 8,500 crore loss through mismanagement of the paddy procurement process. This prompted a contentious debate and brief suspension of 30 MLAs who demanded an immediate discussion.

Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant, alleged significant waste and inefficiency in storing the paddy, which was procured at a minimum support price. Claims included unaccounted-for stock and allegations that some of the produce was ruined by rats or sold by corrupt officials. They demand a rigorous investigation into the affair.

Responding, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dayaldas Baghel dismissed these claims, highlighting Chhattisgarh's pioneering efforts to offer the highest paddy prices and the rigorous checks and measures implemented for storage. The debate remains unresolved, marking a tumultuous session in the state's legislative proceedings.
