Finance Minister Nicola Willis has confirmed the reappointment of John Williamson as Chair of the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation Board, extending his leadership for another two-year term beginning 1 October 2026.

The decision ensures stability and continuity in the governance of one of the country’s key sovereign wealth investment bodies during the period leading up to the next general election.

Maintaining Leadership Stability

The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation Board oversees the investment of government contributions to the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZ Super Fund) and administers the Elevate NZ Venture Capital Fund, both of which play an important role in supporting long-term economic growth and retirement security.

Willis said Williamson’s reappointment reflects the strong leadership he has provided since becoming chair earlier this year.

“Mr Williamson’s reappointment reflects his strong board leadership,” Willis said.

She added that maintaining continuity at the board level is particularly important at a time when several members are relatively new.

“It also maintains stability and continuity during the pre-election period and beyond, particularly as five of the seven board members are in their first term.”

Extensive Leadership and Governance Experience

Williamson brings significant expertise in corporate governance, private equity, and legal practice.

His career includes eight years as managing director of Hellaby Holdings Ltd, a company previously listed on the New Zealand Exchange (NZX). In addition to his corporate leadership experience, he has served in a wide range of governance roles across the private sector.

He also has a background in law, with particular expertise in competition law and Māori resource law, which has informed his contributions in governance and policy-related matters.

Longstanding Role with the Board

Williamson has been involved with the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation for nearly a decade.

  • Board member since: 2016

  • Appointed Chair: March 2024

His new appointment will extend his leadership of the board through October 2028, reinforcing continuity in the management of New Zealand’s sovereign investment funds.

Supporting Long-Term Investment Performance

The Finance Minister said the government remains committed to ensuring the Guardians continue to deliver strong results and effectively manage the country’s long-term investment assets.

“This reappointment underscores the Government’s commitment to ensuring the Guardians continue to deliver robust investment performance and fulfil their mandate to grow New Zealand’s sovereign wealth funds for future generations,” Willis said.

The NZ Super Fund, often referred to as the country’s “sovereign wealth fund,” invests government contributions to help offset the future cost of New Zealand Superannuation as the population ages.
