German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday expressed optimism following what he described as signals from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting an end to combat actions in Iran. Such an outcome could pave the way for European involvement in establishing peace in the Middle East.

Addressing the press ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, Merz stated, "I am expressly grateful that the U.S. president sent a signal in this regard last night that he is prepared to bring the fighting to an end."

Trump had commented on Wednesday that Israel launched aggressive action on Iran's major gas field, marking a significant escalation in the U.S.-Israeli conflict, but noted Israel's restraint unless further provoked by Iran. Merz reaffirmed Europe's readiness to contribute to Middle Eastern stability post-conflict.
