India Launches Digital Self-Enumeration for Census 2027

India has commenced its first self-enumeration exercise for Census 2027, allowing citizens in eight states and union territories to submit data digitally. Key figures such as President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated, encouraging public involvement to ensure comprehensive demographic data collection for informed policy-making and resource distribution.

The Indian government has initiated its first digital self-enumeration process as part of Census 2027, marking a significant milestone in the country's census history. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led by example, participating in this pioneering exercise which allows citizens to self-submit demographic information online.

This digital approach, beginning in eight states and territories, aims to increase participation and ensure accurate data collection. The self-enumeration exercise comes ahead of the traditional door-to-door surveys starting in April. Citizens are encouraged to provide their data via a specialized web portal, paving the way for a more efficient and inclusive census process.

Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the census's critical role in accelerating development and effective resource allocation across India. The shift to a digital format is expected to streamline operations, bringing a modern touch to the decadal exercise, which had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
