Unified Legal Framework for Central Armed Police Forces Approved

Parliament has approved a bill providing a unified legal framework for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), replacing separate service-rule regimes. Despite opposition calls to scrutinize it further, the bill passed smoothly. This legislation follows a Supreme Court directive for a cadre review and reduced IPS officer deputations.

In a significant move, Parliament has approved a bill to unify the legal framework governing personnel across the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). The new law replaces the previous patchwork of separate rules for each of the five central forces.

Despite suggestions from opposition members to have the bill scrutinized by a joint committee of Parliament, the legislation was passed without referrals to committees. The Lok Sabha passed the bill via a voice vote, negating an amendment suggestion by TMC MP Mahua Moitra.

The approval of the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Bill follows a Supreme Court decision urging a reduction of IPS officers' deputation in CAPFs and a cadre review within six months.
