The Chhattisgarh government has taken a significant step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by forming a high-level committee helmed by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. The decision, aimed at fostering religious and gender equality, was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
In Chhattisgarh, various personal laws currently govern matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and family disputes, often leading to legal inequalities and complexity. The proposed UCC strives to simplify these processes by establishing a transparent civil legal framework for all citizens, addressing Article 44 of the Constitution's directive.
The committee plans to gather public feedback through consultations and a web portal, which will inform the drafting of the UCC bill. Once completed, it will be presented to the cabinet for approval and subsequently introduced in the state assembly. This move mirrors similar efforts in Uttarakhand and Gujarat, which have recently adopted UCC measures.
