South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the temporary closure of the popular Jeep Track at Lion’s Head to carry out essential maintenance works aimed at improving safety and enhancing visitor experience.
The closure will come into effect from 20 April 2026 and is expected to remain in place until 20 June 2026, subject to weather conditions and project completion timelines.
Key Hiking Route Closed, But Access Maintained
Lion’s Head—one of Cape Town’s most iconic peaks, offering panoramic 360-degree views of the Atlantic seaboard, the city skyline, and Table Mountain—draws thousands of hikers annually. While the Jeep Track is a widely used access route, SANParks has assured visitors that the summit will remain accessible through alternative trails.
During the closure period, hikers can use the following routes:
-
Kramat Trail (via Signal Hill Road)
-
Upper Rhine Road Trail
-
Kloof Road Trail
Additionally, the Lion’s Head parking area will remain open for those accessing the mountain via the Kramat route.
Enhancing Safety and Visitor Experience
SANParks emphasized that the maintenance project is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade trail infrastructure, ensuring safer and more sustainable hiking conditions for visitors. The Jeep Track, due to its heavy usage, requires periodic rehabilitation to prevent erosion and improve accessibility.
The initiative reflects broader conservation and tourism management priorities, balancing environmental preservation with the growing popularity of outdoor recreation.
Public Advisory and Safety Measures
Authorities have urged the public to strictly follow all signage, barriers, and safety instructions during the closure period. Unauthorized access to the closed track may pose safety risks and disrupt maintenance activities.
SANParks also confirmed that regular updates regarding the project’s progress will be shared through official communication channels, allowing visitors to plan their trips accordingly.
A Temporary Disruption for Long-Term Gains
While the temporary closure may inconvenience regular hikers, the improvements are expected to significantly enhance the overall hiking experience at Lion’s Head—one of South Africa’s most visited natural landmarks.
With alternative routes available and infrastructure upgrades underway, SANParks aims to ensure that the site continues to offer safe, accessible, and world-class outdoor experiences for both local and international visitors.
