Justice Amitav Kumar Gupta, a retired judge of the Jharkhand High Court, has been named the new Lokayukta of Jharkhand, according to a statement issued by Lok Bhawan on Thursday. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar sanctioned the appointment, filling a position that had remained vacant for several years.

Born on May 31, 1959, Gupta's educational journey began at St. Xavier's School in Sahebganj, and culminated at the University of Delhi, where he obtained his LLB and pursued post-graduation. His judicial career took off on June 11, 1997, when he joined the Bihar Superior Judicial Service as an additional district judge, leading to his elevation to an additional judge of the Jharkhand High Court in 2013.

The state government informed the high court on April 13 about the appointment plans, following directives to expedite the selection of the Lokayukta and other administrative roles. The high court is scheduled to revisit the case on April 23, ensuring the swift filling of essential state positions.
